NEW MUSIC: 21 YEAR OLD CHIKA DROPS DEBUT EP 'UNLEARNING'

Chika is an Indian singer/songwriter from Oxford, 21 years old, that predominantly makes alternative hip hop/r&b music.

Releasing Feb 9th, ‘Unlearning’ is a collection of reflective thoughts. Predominantly based on analysing previous relationships, the EP starts with the retrospective track ‘gr8ful/h8ful’, before diving into ‘SAVIOUR’, which looks more at the moment where you come to realise just how toxic a relationship has become. It then moves on to new grounds in ‘Real Deep’, a song about wanting to know a person intimately in every way, before finishing with the self-empowering track ‘INCREDIBLE’, a song about, well, feeling like you’re incredible (and acknowledging just how far you’ve come).

When you're 21, you're just beginning to really have the capacity to look back on the people you've met and the relationships that have soured and think 'why?'. This EP was written in the span of a few weeks where I spent a lot of time analysing every single relationship I’d ever had, including the one I have with myself, and applying pressure to see where the cracks were. What I found was difficult to accept at times, annoying at others, but still allowed me to know myself even better – and these songs are the result.

gr8ful/h8ful

An unashamedly petty song about not forgiving someone. Sometimes you just have to be angry about things that have happened because anger can be healthy, and indulging in it can be dangerous, but also cathartic and fun. This song is a 'cathartic and fun' occasion. It's petty and self-indulgent and about reflecting on past relationships and deciding that you have control over how you interpret things, and that if someone tells you to be grateful for the good things they've given you, at the expense of ignoring all the pain and trauma - then you walk away and let your anger protect you.

SAVIOUR

SAVIOUR is the sibling to gr8ful/h8ful. Whilst gr8ful/h8ful is more reflective, Saviour is the moment you realise that a relationship is bad for you – that instant feeling of ice water on your back, of objectively analysing your relationship and thinking ‘oh God, what am I doing?’. It’s an aggressive, methodical r&b track that languishes between heartbreaking and heartbroken.

Real Deep

Real Deep is a flirtatious, sexy number reminiscent of late-night conversations and thinking someone has the potential to be your soulmate. Mixing cool r&b vibes with sensual vocals and lyrics, it’s a track that teases at the possibility of something more whilst still maintaining the upper-ground.

INCREDIBLE

INCREDIBLE is a track that backs itself, and its self-empowering message reflects on a feeling of progress. No matter where you are, you’ve come from somewhere – and you’ve survived, and grown, and always found moments to thrive. INCREDIBLE is a song that conveys that with cheeky lyrics full of self-confidence and self-belief.
